I’ve been saying this forever, and it’s still as true as it’s ever been: when your tone is righteous, you can jes’ play a G chord, and you’re a genius. Tone is a very personal thing for a guitarist, as Carlos Santana once noted, “Your tone is your face.”, it’s how people recognize you; without a distinctive and compelling tone of your own, you’re a face in the crowd. Every guitarist you can think of has a unique and identifiable sound, that’s why you can think of them. Tone is a grail quest; a journey and not a destination, and, for some, obtaining a signature sound can be a lifelong obsession. For others, it can be as simple as plugging the right guitar into the right amp. More to follow….
